  JUICE & CLEANSING FAQ

Why Juice?

Most people don’t consume enough raw fruits and vegetables in their day. Consuming fresh juice is an excellent way to obtain a large amount of vitamins and nutrients your body needs to operate at its peak potential. This video clip from the movie ‘Hungry for Change’ provides a good summary on why we should juice, watch it here

What does cold pressed mean?

There is juice, and then there is cold-pressed juice. Cold-pressing is the process of squeezing the maximum amount of juice out of ingredients like vegetables and fruits without the use of a rotary blade that is present in a conventional centrifugal juicer. Juices made using a cold-press method contain more vitamins, minerals and enzymes than those made with a traditional centrifugal machine. The cold-press method results in minimal oxidation, zero heat, and the highest quality juice. Additionally, due to minimal oxidation, the juice stays better longer (3-4 days) while also retaining the highest amount of nutrients.

What is a juice cleanse?

A juice cleanse is a short program (1-5 days, or longer if doing a custom cleanse) of completely cutting your food intake and replacing it with raw juice. The ultimate goal of a juice cleanse is to flood your body with nutrients, living enzymes, and vitamins; that means for the duration of your cleanse, you will be avoiding solid foods and only consuming raw, cold-pressed juices, water and herbal teas. This gives the body the time and nutritional support it requires to carry out deeper detoxification and healing than it normally would. Your body is given a break from unhealthy food choices, dehydration and general excess that is central to the North American diet

Why cleanse?

Juice cleansing is one of the purest ways to heal the digestive system and embrace overall health. Ingesting raw juices allow your body to absorb key vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients vital for cellular nourishment. Health experts advise us to consume a whopping 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, to maximize the full potential of our mind and body. In reality most North Americans consume half of this recommended intake. By engaging in a cleanse, your body will be given more nutrition than it’s probably ever received.

At the end of your cleanse you should feel rejuvenated, energetic, lighter, have a glow to your skin, and you may have even dropped a few pounds.

Still not convinced? Watch the amazing film by Joe Cross calledFat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” and we are sure that you will change your mind. This award-winning documentary is about how one man transformed his disease ridden body after completing 60-day green juice cleanse, and then went on to inspire others to do the same.

Which cleanse should I do?

We strongly encourage customers to select the cleanse duration based on your activity level and goals. For example, first time cleansers who have a moderate activity level should probably select The Level 1 cleanse for 3 or 5 days in duration.

Do you use organic produce?

Yes, many of our ingredients are organic. We support both local and organic farming practices. We ensure all of our recipes that utilize produce classified under the “dirty dozen” or “dirty dozen plus” category, are always sourced organic. We strive to keep the same policy with other ingredients, availability permitting.

Why are you not fully organic?

Mamásu is committed to sourcing organic produce as much as possible. Some farmers are unable to afford organic certification even though they do not use pesticides and herbicides in their farming practices. Therefore even though some products are not certified as organic, they are essentially “clean produce”.

Due to the regional and climate constraints of Calgary, we are not always able to secure large amounts of specialty ingredients as certified organic. If we wanted to maintain a consistent supply year round for certain specialty ingredients, our costs dramatically increase and in turn raise the price point for our clients.

Mamásu is committed to consistently sourcing the heavy pesticide ridden foods (the dirty dozen plus list) as organic, and when we are able to achieve reasonable pricing on the other specialty ingredients, we source them organic as well. As for our citrus fruits, we peel all of our limes, lemons and oranges before we put them in the juicer. Therefore any pesticides that reside on the skin of the fruits would be removed.

We would like to keep our pricing as reasonable without comprising quality or nutrition. As compared to other juice cleanse products, we do not add water to our juices to achieve lower costs; we sell nutrient dense, vitamin packed juice, not water.  We believe in conducting business with honesty and integrity; our guiding principle is that we would never give our customers anything that we would not drink ourselves. Please visit the Our Juices page to see which ingredients are consistently sourced as certified organic.

Is organic produce really beneficial?

A £12m, 4-year EU funded study by Newcastle University suggests that organic fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than there non-organic counterparts. The study suggests that organic produce may contain higher concentrations of cancer fighting and heart beneficial antioxidants. Some produce such as organic tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, onions and lettuce had between 20% and 40% more nutrients than the non-organic variety.

In our opinion, especially when trying to detox, you should go with organic to avoid adding more toxins into your body. The studies on organic and non-organic produce will always be controversial based on who is funding the study and what their motives are, but why let your health be the guinea pig? Go organic!

Are your juices pasteurized?

No, our juices are 100% raw and unpasteurized. In order to obtain a prolonged shelf life, and protect it from bacteria, many store bought juices are pasteurized. Pasteurizing, which is a heating process, reduces the health value of juice by killing both the good and the bad - the harmful bacteria and much of the healthy natural nutrients, vitamins and enzymes. Live foods are full of useful substances, as opposed to thermally treated juices where much of the nutrition has been destroyed.

Why does this juice look different from when I last purchased it?

Since our produce is made with flawless fresh ingredients that contain no added flavors, there will always be variance from one batch to the next. To put it in perspective, depending on the growing season, the taste of apples, oranges, cucumbers etc. will change; likewise, the taste of our juice will also change with the seasons.

Why does my juice separate?

Settling/Separation: Since Mamásu juice is raw and has no additives (only additives can prevent the natural settling process), be sure to give your juice a good shake prior to consumption.

White or Orange Specs: Juices that contain ginger or turmeric may have white or orange specks in the bottom of the juice bottle. These are of no concern. These specks are ginger or turmeric sediment which naturally settle to the bottom of the bottle.
