  ENVIRONMENT FAQ

What do you do with the leftover produce?

During the juicing process, skins, peels and pulp separate from the juice and normally go to waste. At Mamásu, we collect our juice pulp and donate it to Grow Calgary so it may be used as compost in their gardens. The fibrous pulp from the plant foods breaks down quickly and creates compost that is infused with a variety of nutrients which then in turn creates healthy soil and high-yielding plants.

Why don’t you use glass bottles?

We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint. Studies show that plastic is actually a more environmentally sound choice than glass for the following reasons:

1. It is dramatically lighter than other bottle options such as glass, which means less fuel is used to create and deliver each bottle

2. Glass consumes approximately twice as much energy to produce than plastic (source: Carnegie Mellon University Green Design Institute, 2008). The fossil fuels required to generate the very high temperatures needed to form glass are just one of the considerations in the production process.

3. We use polyethylene terephthalate (PET #1) bottles which do not leach, and are generally considered the safest single-use plastic-bottle choice. Additionally our bottles are not heated, and our product is only kept in the bottle for a period of 3-4 days.

4. PET #1 are accepted by most curbside municipal programs and just about all plastic recycling centers
